sable, a cheif embattled & three swords fesswise argent. i'm terrible at icons and simple symbols. so i enlisted the help of my friend, [livejournal.com profile] jocelyncee to design the family heraldic coat of arms for the von creepensteins. jo is in the sca and has studied real heraldry. she also has a good eye for design, so she was perfect to help me with this. we have designs for pre-curse (with color) and afterwards,(monochromatic.) this sketch will give you an idea of how things developed. thanks for letting me post this, jo!

i would like to compare it to actual transylvanian heraldry but since we didn't have any on hand, we compared it to old german heraldry.
the colors pre-curse are sable, gold and red.

i even played with it further, like so:

this is the device for odile and her sisters. only certain members of the family, known as cursebreakers (wow. how original. insert sarcasm here,) can bear this device.

if you're not family, but are a friend, ally or retainer then you can wear the badge, see jo's sketch above. it's the one with the black sword with two black drops astride it.

the symbolism in the coat of arms:
3 Swords-according to jo, the swords symbolize protection and the von creepenstein's view their purpose as to defend the living against the undead and to protect others from evil magics. also, the family's has three cursebreakers, those who are born with the ability to break the curse on the family. in the past, there were 3 born every generation. this has changed until modern times. so far, no one has been successful in breaking the curse.
drop(i can't think of the right terms for these)-one for the tears of sorrow from the hardships of their curse, the other for the blood shed in the protection of others.
circles-for the cursebreakers device, the two dots above, symbolize much the same as the tear, but echo the two dots under their right eyes.
